The Singing Sculptures of the Hämeensilta Bridge

Minna Leinonen, composition, concept idea
Jussi Suonikko, sound design

Singers: Kielo Kärkkäinen, Tuukka Haapaniemi, Hannu “Hannibal” Stark, Juha Junttu

The sculptures of the Hämeensilta bridge have silently endured the cold of winter and the heat of summer for nearly one hundred years, but for the Tampere Biennale, the sculptures by Wäinö Aaltonen will be granted their long-longed-for voice. The texts performed by the statues are based on writings by Leena Ojalatva, Tuula Pelttari, Heikki Partala and Marjatta Virtanen, originally from the Koskessa virtaa mustetta (There is Ink Flowing in the Rapid) anthology.

Jussi Suonikko’s artistic work has been supported by the Pirkanmaa Cultural Foundation.

Naiad – An interactive sound installation

Juulia Haverinen (*1993)
Esther Calderón Morales (*1996)

Naiad is an interactive sound installation for the Tampere Biennale on the Finlayson grounds, by the Tammerkoski rapids. The work highlights the one-of-a-kind relationship between Tammerkoski and the City of Tampere and their shared history. How much control do people have at the end of the day in the face of nature? And what would the waters of the Tampere region and their spirits want to say to us, if they had a voice?
